Oil From Gulf Spill Reaches Major Current

-- From Wikinews
Wednesday, May 19, 2010

US scientists say that oil from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico has reached the Loop Current, which could propel the oil towards the coast of Florida.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), limited amounts of oil have entered the current, and could reach Florida's southern coast in as few as six days, although it would be highly diluted by the time it did so. Other estimates place the time before oil reaches Florida as closer to ten days.

Satellite images show oil moving south from the main slick into the current, which is a rapidly-moving body of water that flows from the Caribbean Sea towards the Atlantic Ocean. The speed of the current is predicted to disperse the oil that is picked up, which would lead to difficulties in tracking it.

NOAA qualified their warning by saying that the amount of oil in questions is a small percentage of the total spilled, most of which is to the north of the current. The agency's Scientific Support Coordinator, Charlie Henry, said that "[t]here is some light oil filling the loop current," though he said the agency "expect[s] it to degrade before it comes close to threatening South Florida."

Governor-General Issues Statement on Recent Russian Actions.

We strongly regret seeing reports of an escalation of actions taken by Russian authorities against the staff and activities of the British Council in St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg. The offices were ordered to shut-down in a continuing dispute over ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko's death in London.

Russian authorities informed the British Ambassador in Moscow on 14 January that they intended "to take a series of administrative measures against the British Council. The British Council operates in 110 other countries and territories worldwide and its efforts to promote cultural and educational exchanges play a vital role in increasing understanding between the peoples of the United Kingdom and Russia. Its presence and activities are also specifically sanctioned by a 1994 UK/Russia Agreement on Co-operation in Education, Science and Culture, signed by Russia.

We hope this matter will be quickly and fairly resolved so that the British Council will be able continue its good work in Russia.

We call upon the Russian government to hand over Andrei Lugovoi, who British prosecutors have charged with murdering a Russian exile who died at a London hospital in November 2006 after the two met at a central London hotel.

We call upon the Russian government to abide by the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

Governor-General's Statement on Iran's Relase of the British Hostages

Press Release:
The Government of the Dominion of British West Florida is pleased that the British Marines and Sailors are home safely.

We are thankful that Her Majesty's Government in and for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland managed to put enough pressure on Iran to force it to put an end to the confrontation without having to make any formal statement, even of regret, at the incident.

The incident should never have occurred, and the Dominion of British West Florida will not forget the unlawful actions by the renegade regime in Tehran just because they eventually released their hostages.

We are pleased to note that there was no linkage to anything else, especially the five Iranian officials held in Iraq.

We note that the Government of the United Kingdom gave the Islamic Republic of Iran an initial period of quiet in which to release the prisoners and when that did not work, went to the UN and the European Union while rallying support in the region. Whether that counted is not known. But certainly Iran complained about it, so it was noticed.

We have not lost focus on the intentions of the Iranian government with regard to weapons of mass destruction, and Iran remains on list of nations which are 'Dangerous and Prohibited'.

Robert, Duke of Florida, Lord of St. George, GSB
Her Majesty's Governor-General in and for the
Dominion of British West Florida.
